About the Acolyte Ministry

At Great Bridge United Methodist Church (GBUMC) we strive to represent the entirety of the body of Christ during our worship service, especially those in which we gather around the table as a community to participate in the Eucharist. One of the way that children and youth participate in worship at GBUMC is through our Acolyte Ministry.
4th & 5th Graders are invited to serve with the program as Junior Acolytes. Middle School aged youth are able to serve as Senior Acolytes and play a large role in training and leadership.

Contemporary Service Responsibilities (9:30AM)

The acolyte carries the light of Christ into the sanctuary at 9:30AM to mark the beginning of worship. They sit with the preacher in the front row during the first two songs. After the Children’s Message, the acolyte lights the candlelighter off of the Christ candle. They will lead the children to Sunday School and remain in their designated Sunday School class for the 9:30 hour.

Traditional Service Responsibilities (8AM & 11AM)

On a communion Sunday (usually the first Sunday of the month) there will be three acolytes. The two junior acolytes will lead a processional, one carrying the crucifer and two carrying candle lighters. Acolytes assist in the celebration of communion as well as leading the congregation out of the sanctuary by taking the light of Christ into the world.

Scheduling Process

Each acolyte has the opportunity to serve at all three services. The acolyte will be asked to specify the service that they prefer, and will likely serve at that service most frequently.
